Lidl guitars?

I noticed that for the past few days every other search phrase for people coming to the forum via Google is "Lidl Guitar" or "Axeman guitars" (which I presume is the Lidl brand?).

So whats the story? Why so many people looking for Lidl guitars? I am presuming there have been some adverts on TV or something?

Here's a thread on it. Suspect the usual low end of the market c**p.

If you know the way Lidl works, it has two themes each week. This Thursday's theme is music. See for yourself:

    http://www.lidl.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg//lidl_uk/hs.xsl/offerdate.htm?offerdate=26111&ar2=

Jocko is considering a £20 Asda guitar so there seems to be a market for cheap instruments - that may well cause more frustration than enjoyment.

Any cheaper and buying a new guitar every few months will be cheaper than replacing the strings.
  • But whats the interest in Lidl?

Why not just go to Argos or the charity shop?

    Anyway - all very amusing!

My father in law is a regular lidl shopper and as far as I can work out the general belief in Lidltarians is that "it doesn't need to be good, just as long as it's cheap".

People will be thinking it's a good bargain for a Christmas present and they will already be in Lidl so no need to go elsewhere.

I'm a big fan of Lidl for food. Their Italian tinned tomatoes are brilliant and the same price as the cheap nasty ones elsewhere. But I wouldn't buy a guitar there!

I guess the thing is, most non-musicians don't realise just how big a quality gap there can be between a really cheap guitar and a fairly cheap (ie sub £200) guitar.

Just to chip in here it is probably because Lidl stuff is known for being cheap but good quality.

IE they are excellent for motorcycle accessories / clothing. I still have waterproofs from Lidl that are still 100% waterproof where as "branded" stuff at more than double the price leaks like a sieve

Would be interesting for someone to get one and set it up properly, see what they are like.

So what tune would you play whilst in Lidl trying out one of these quality guitars?
    "Sweet chilli of mine"

Based on what they normally have in their non-food section I would think that this guitar would be a decent bet after setting up – especially for the money. A cheap way to pick one up that you don’t mind getting beat up.

Obviously it’s not going to be as good as a guitar costing 3-4 times as much but I don’t think it would be awful.

Has it yet been considered that these might just be retouched rejects from some Chinese manufacturer and Lidl bought them as such. After all, could you imagine the answer if you asked them to have it set up to concert standard with new strings.

Does anyone have any experience of the tuners they're getting in?
  • ESBlondeESBlonde Posts: 980Member
Just bought a tuner as a stocking filler for my oldest lad, he's crap at looking after stuff. So I sha'n't know for a few weeks because it's staying wrapped.

My experience with thier tools and stuff is that for a single or light use they are OK, professionals would not trust things at this price point. An acoustic 'toy' guitar for an 8 year old seems reasonable, for a 13 year old to learn on I'd probably steer clear. Thier low cost guitar stands look OK for home use.

Bought one of the tuners yesterday, checked on 3 guitars against a Boss TU12H and against a couple of Android tuner apps, it's spot on so a good deal at £7.99.
  • I just find it really interesting how there is this frenzy of interest in Lidl products.

Wow - a Lidle tuner - is it any good?

Wow - a Lidl guitar. Is it any good?

Wow - a Lidle stand. Is it any good?

Anyone would think they had just re-invented the wheel or something. ITS A SUPERMARKET SELLING CHEAP STUFF!

Just like every other catalogue, supermarket, toy shop, cancer research shop, Argos, Littlewoods etc.

What is it abouy Lidl specifically?

As I say, fascinating and I must also say that if I was a guitar shop selling starter packs I would be so depressed seeing how Lidle can generate so many eager buyers when they are selling nothing more than you can pickup in a thousand other outlets.

A really BIG thank you to Lidl though as its generating a lot of traffic for the forum - THANK YOU LIDL!!!
  • Wow!

Good old Yamaha are now in Lidl too.

This is about £10 cheaper than any other online store....

Don't get too excited - Its a keyboard!

My daughter wants a keyboard so maybe I will order one!!! lol

Supermarkets selling cheap music stuff, who would have thought it? Fair enough of course, and it may be just what you are after at the right price, in which case why not. If I'm going to be spending anything remotely like serious money on a guitar though, I would go elsewhere. The Lidl phenomenon is curious though!

I only go to Lidl when they have items of specific interest to me, I check their website fairly often, they do have some decent, cheap items in from time to time.
I'm a keen cyclist, Lidl periodically have a range of cycling themed items in, there are always threads on the cycling forums when Lidl have bike stuff, some of the things are great value, hard wearing and people are interested to know when they are back in at Lidl so they can buy more.
As far as it goes I was looking for a new tuner, was going to buy one at Christmas, saw they were coming in at Lidl, did a search online for the brand/anyone who'd bought one in the past, they seemed ok so I took a punt.
So far it's worked out. I'm very happy.
I could have gone into my local music store and paid double but at the moment every penny counts.
My parents bought the Yamaha keyboard from Lidl 3 years ago for my son, he only played it for a month or so and it's not been used since. Never mind.

No offence intended AL, and glad to hear you got a good tuner at a good price too. \:\) I've nothing against Lidl either - I shop there myself sometimes, and indeed you do find yourself looking through all the interesting stuff they get in.

As to the keyboard, it does look like a good deal. I don't think it has touch sensitive keys (you wouldn't expect it at that price obviously) but does anyone know at what sort of price do you start to get keyboards with weighted keys and touch sensitive?

I think Yamaha do touch sensitive practice pianos with a graded action (heavier at the bass, lighter at the treble end) from around £240. Not sure about 61 and 76 note keyboards though, weighted action seems to come in at a higher price point.
  • MegiMegi Posts: 7,207Member
Cheers for that - maybe I can do without the weighted keys in the interest of not spending too much! I guess I'll have to have a look around at the various options.

Me too and I also see the Lidl recommendations on cycling forums.

I am not sure but Catherine Duc has a helpful page on the topic.

Thanks for the link Lester! Really I have some thinking to do about what I might want in a keyboard. Cool harmonica though!

It's because they will sell an item for one maybe 2 weeks and when they are gone they are gone. So they build a bit of hype up and people get interested in it and for Lidl it gets people interested in the store and more importantly it gets people going into the actual store where Lidl hope they will buy other items and then become a regular customer.

Good piece of business really - always strange that Lidl and Aldi are the budget supermarkets in the UK as in Germany they are the two main stores.

Not sure Lidl would be getting 'serious' guitars in any time soon though!

Would be fun though coming out of Lidl with a pint of milk in one hand and a Gordon Smith in the other!
  • MegiMegi Posts: 7,207Member
Well I suppose if I did see a Gordon Smith in there for 50 quid, I might be tempted... Or a PRS maybe!

Horses for courses in the end I guess!

Funny I actually found a well-priced HiFi set in Lidl (and this was in a small town, with nothing else remotely similar in the store). Also heard once from a friend about a drum kit being sold in one of the smaller shops, although I think it was instantly sold.

Kinda reminds me of Wesley Guitars which I think are purely online and they're getting quite popular and their guitars are pretty cheap too.

Guess it's a nice way to get smaller guitar companies out into the general market, which is where you're likely to find more beginners and people who never considered playing to start with. I mean it would be harder to sell them in a premium music shop, where people are being recommended Squires and Epiphones.
