Play them before you commit. A Garrison may suit your style to a T or it may not. They are certainly well made and the build quality is high, as is the quality of the woods used.
For what it's worth (and it's probably not a lot ) I have one and love it. Mine's the G-10, though, which has been discontinued. The main bit's made of birch, which I understand they had trouble sourcing.
Because of the unusual structure, they're pretty heavy, but I like the solid feel.

Cedar model - nice rich warm tone, lacking volume and "cut" among other guitars.
Spruce model - mature, rich tone, lacking volume and no "punch" for a dreadnought.
