That's absolutley dreadful - it's upset my morning.
I saw him play a few times at the Music Live in B'ham and he was stunning as well as being a really nice bloke. A friend of mine went to one of his seminars as well.
Really, really sad - make the most of it while you're here.
Oh man, that's awful I met Eric and had a lesson with him when I'd only been playing (mainly classical) for about six months. Not only a great teacher and amazing player, teaching me some really good things, but one of the nicest people I've ever had the privalage to meet. Was thinking back on it the other day about when we got talking about Deep Purple after his gig that night, great chap. He clearly loved his family and it's a horrible loss for them, and the music world. He played Smells Like Dead Rock Star (his cover of Teen Spirit) amazingly to show me something and he was a fantastic performer even to an audience of one. Rest in peace man.
I dug out the album he signed for me (he did his then new album Spin for my dad, and I have that too) and here it is. It reads "To Will, good luck with the music, Erich Roche" with a drawing of a guitar.
Wow that is terrible news Never had the pleasure of meeting the man but he was one of my favourite players and genuinely seemed like a really top bloke.
I've just been staring at my reply screen for ages in utter shock. What does this world have agains young modest people with unique talents? See you again at the ultimate jam Eric.
I'm stunned. I've only just picked up on the news via this posting but I'll echo all the above sentiments. I saw him play in Brum and was gobsmacked at his playing. I spoke to him before and after the show (he was kind enough to mention my son - a Nirvana fan- before playing his amazing version of Smells Like Teen Spirit). Guess what - for such a talented bloke he was so warm, patient and self-effacing.
Why does so much talent have to be snatched back by the gods so early?
R.I.P. Eric. I'd like to think the first guy you'll jam with up there will be Rory Gallagher.
